Detroit: Where We Used to Live

Throughout the late '80s and '90s I worked seemingly endlessly in my home town on a night project in B&W. This was an attempt to show the spirit that remained in a city that was dying fast. I'm now back at it almost every night, this time in color, and have found it much farther gone than my last survey. While Detroit has been enjoying world media attention and a still fragile resurgance, this is not reflected in most of the neighborhoods. Many hang on by a thread while there are those that have been completely devastated by the mass exodus of a once burgeoning population. However, the spirit lives on and that's what these photographs are about. This time around, I'm delving into these neighborhoods and the ghosts of the many generations that occupied these places. They come alive at night and I will continue to photograph among them.
